Class News!
Welcome to Second Grade! I am looking forward to a year filled with education, discoveries, laughter and rich experiences. The beginning of a new year is filled with lots of new experiences, and it will take your child some time to adjust to a new teacher, new classroom, new routine and even new classmates. I will help to make all transitions for students as smooth as possible.
Language Arts
We will begin our Language Arts unit with Silly Stories. We will be reading fiction and nonfiction selections this year. We will be working on writing complete sentences with a big focus on capitals and end marks. What makes a complete sentence, subject and predicate of a sentence. By the end of the year your student will be able to write a complete paragraph with a topic sentence, details and a concluding sentence. We will be using the program Daily Language Instruction (DLI) everyday to learn new Language Arts skills. DLI will introduce a Language Arts skill on Monday, the students practice the skill all week and then there is a quiz on Friday. The program works in a spiral so the students are always using the skills they have already learned. Make sure to ask your child about what they are learning in DLI each week. We will also have leveled reading groups that will run Tuesday-Friday.
Math
Math
In Second Grade we will continue to use the Go Math Program that your child used last year in first grade. We will begin the year with addition and subtraction facts within 20, then we will move onto place value. We will start Rocket Math the second week of school. Please have your student practice addition and subtraction math facts at home. The hope is that all students know their math facts instantly by the end of the school year.
